Organic Panela Sugar (Raw Dried Cane Juice) 225g

GOOD TASTE: You’ll notice Panela’s vivid, earthen gold first. Then, the sweet-burnt aroma. Panela is a handmade tradition that’s endured in Colombia for centuries. It’s delicious: fine with full-bodied flair and ready to enrich all your favourites like your regular brown sugar, only naturally.

GOOD PROCESS: We keep it simple. Low-intensive. Low-intervention. The result celebrates origin. Quimbaya Panelero farmers harvest the sugar cane then juice it using a trapiche. Its crystallised form is panela. No bleaching. No goodness-stripping factories. Panela is a way of life.

How is panela sugar made?

Panela has been traditionally handmade for centuries by dehydrating raw sugarcane juice over a low heat until it is a thick syrup, then cooling the syrup into bricks. The low heat fires are fuelled by sugarcane stalks that are dried in the sun after harvesting and pressing, making it a very sustainable process.

Is panela same as jaggery?

Panela from Central and South America; made from sugarcane; ranges from toffee to dark-roux colouring. Jaggery from India; usually made from sugarcane but sometimes made from date palms; ranges from tan to chocolate colouring. The two sugars have very different taste profiles.

When and how should I use Panela?

You can switch out most light-medium brown sugars for Panela and get excellent results. In fact, you can also lose the need for extracts and essences in baking, as the Panela provides a beautifully full-bodied caramel taste. It also makes a great flavour enhancer in cooking and for use in cocktails.

Panela in curries, cakes and smoothies

Bonraw is an absoloute game changer. For a family who tends to avoid using white sugar in cooking and baking, Bonraw is a brilliant alternative. I now only use the Panela in curries, cakes/cookies and smoothies. My dishes taste perfect and there is no difference in taste in comparison to white sugar which i absoloutley love! I recommend Bonraw for those who want to avoid using white sugar.
