How it’s sourced, its uses & the all-important health benefits…

At Bonraw we’re obsessed with good choices around sweet. That’s why we’re very excited to be discussing the very best that Mother Nature has to offer and that is Organic Mountain Bee Pollen on our blog. Don't confuse bee pollen with honey, propolis or even royal jelly. Bee Pollen is a vibrant blend of honey, pollen, nectar, producing small multi-coloured granules. Sweetly distinctive; slightly floral, fruity, and lively in profile. It’s a great way to boost flavour in your favourite foods, naturally.

The benefits?

It is nutrition packed, helping boost your daily vitamins from Vitamin C and E, High in Iron Biotin and Folic Acid to name a few. Bee pollen boasts tremendous health benefits, so much so that the German Federal Board of Health recognises bee pollen as a medicine.[i]

Get to know our down-to-earth ingredients.

As you can probably guess, no man-made equipment is required to collect bee pollen. Bees collect pollen from plant anthers, carry it to the hive and pack it into honeycomb cells, where the surface will be covered in a layer of honey and wax. It then becomes food for the colony known as ‘bee bread’. Our Bees are located in Sierra de Huelva in Andalucía where spring flowers grow wild, we source in one of the most biodiverse areas of the world, from rockrose, lavender, heather, oak, rosemary, and thyme. No goodness-stripping factories in sight.

Why is it so healthy?

Studies suggest that the nutritional profile of Bee Pollen can contain well over 250 biologically active substances [ii], including a range of nutrients, vitamins, amino acids, and lipids.

Let’s talk about the wonderful health benefits:

There are many scientifically backed health claims that can be made about bee pollen.

1.Supporting your immune system and bodily health

Bee pollen is packed with a variety of antioxidants. Enzymatic hydrolysates from bee pollen have remarkable antioxidant properties.[iii] They have been found to be beneficial for reducing chronic inflammation, fighting infections, and combating the growth and spread of tumours. Pollen is also a source of vitamin E & C, and both actively support the immune system.

2. Promotes Healing

Our livers work very hard to remove toxins from our blood, and extraordinarily, studies have shown that bee pollen can improve its detoxifying abilities.[iv]

Not only does bee pollen promote healing for the liver, but it has also been used as a home remedy for burn injuries.[v]

3.Relieving stress and inflammation

Among bee pollen’s variety of antioxidants is quercetin, which lowers the production of inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids.[vi] This is very important as having too many omega-6 fatty acids in the body can lead to the development of numerous diseases. While we’re very impressed by bee pollen’s ability to aid our bodily health, it’s music to our ears to hear that bee pollen is a natural stress reliever.[vii] Bee pollen is a source of potassium, which contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system (our nervous systems are weakened by stress).

4. Bee pollen as a dietary supplement

As mentioned, bee pollen has a tremendous nutrition content, which is why it’s no surprise that it’s considered a valuable dietary supplement. These nutrients have been found to increase the vitamin C and magnesium content in the thymus, heart muscle, and skeletal muscles. [viii]

Further research has suggested that these health benefits could be useful to children with minimal appetite or developmental delays. In adults, it is helpful for people undergoing surgeries, or even for adults who are recovering from alcohol addiction or physical and mental stress.[ix]

5.Bee Pollen & Weight Loss

The question of whether bee pollen can be instrumental in weight loss has a controversial history. To answer it simply, the amino acids in bee pollen help to increase your metabolism by dissolving fat cells in the body.[x]

However, bee pollen diet supplements have been advertised by manufacturers to help you lose weight fast. These claims lack any scientific evidence and are very ‘eyebrow raise’ worthy.
